Equipment

Firstly invest in your photographic expertise, secondly in equipment.

Photography is not all about equipment. But when you advance in photographic techniques and know-how, you should start investing in solid equipment.

Camera Bodies

The camera sensor is the retina. Together with the camera body they build the core of the photographic system. The better the sensor, the better the quality. I am working mainly with the 35mm full frame Sony Alpha series.

Main model currently is the Sony A7 MK III full frame body. As backup I am using the A7 MK II fullframe and the APS-C Sony Alpha 6000 Series. This delivers increased crop factors for super tele shootings. Yet 95% of the pictures are shot with the full frame 35mm sensors. For aerial photography I am working with the Mavic Series from DJI. The current one in use is the Mavic Air 2 Combo.

A good photographer shoots outstanding photos even with an entry level Canon 2000 D, while an unexperienced one would not get an average  quality picture shot with the insane Hasselblad H6D.

So you can start your journey with an entry level 400 Euro system, and upgrade along the way.

Lenses

The eye of the camera system. The better the optical quality of the used glass in the lenses, the better the optical performance.

I have several different lenses in use for different purposes. From 12mm wide angle to 600mm tele. Wether landscape, macro, mid-tele or super-tele. Each type of shooting requires specific lenses.

The light transmission capability, also called the f-factor, is one key characteristics that defines the lenses performance especially in low light conditions (which is the usual condition in wildlife photography, as most species start escaping from their daily hides either in dawn or sunset).

The 600mm f4 Sony lense is the current lens of choice for most wildlife shootings. But also the 200-400mm Sigma and the 150-600 Sigma are often used.

Tools

Essential for different purposes. First call – Tripods. From heavy duty to light carbon travel models. Especially for wildlife videography or long expousre landscape shots the correct tripod is the basis for a solid quality target photo.

Other items like condensator microphones for videography and wildlife voice recording are helpful gadgets. High resolution mobile battery powered external camera monitors support mainly in longer outdoor sessions. The high speed adjustment of focus  settings is made much easier as well as the monitoring of the species you shoot, when waiting in your camouflage hide for the perfect moment.

The high end, – usually white coloured – lenses should be covered in camouflage neopren coatings. Not only to protect the quadriple digit lenses, but also to make them invsible for wildlifes sensitive eyes.
